Earth Day 2019

Earth Day 2019

More than 30 Mumbaikars joined to help cleanup the only national park in middle of Mumbai and Thane city. The occasion for this gathering was Earth Day 2019.

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 to protest against negative impacts of 150 years of industrial development in the United States. Since then, Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on April 22nd. Today, more than 1 billion people in 192 countries, celebrate this day. The theme for this year’s Earth Day was “Protecting Our Species”.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park, is a 104 sq. km protected area in between Mumbai and Thane. It is a home to 274 species of birds, 170 species of butterfly, 35 species of mammals which also includes Leopard; a top predator in the park and more than 1300 species of trees. This gives the park an utmost importance in terms of species conservation in Mumbai.

On 22nd April 2019, more than 30 Mumbaikars which includes school students to senior citizens, joined hands to help the park to remove the unwanted plants growing inside the park. This was later followed with a talk with Wildlife Researcher- Mr. Nikit Surve, who has been studying leopards in the park since 2015. The talk was held upon coexisting with wildlife and measures to protect the species in urban areas. This event was conducted by GreenLine in collaboration with Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Feedback/testimonials from participants

Thanks, GeeenLine team for organizing this wonderful event on the occasion of Earth day. That was indeed one of the best ways to celebrate it with a bunch of nature lovers. In addition to the weed clearance activity, session conducted by Nikit Surve was informative and interactive. Kudos to your and SGNP team for this initiative.

It was an immense pleasure for me to be a part of this event. Earth Day 2019 was a memorable experience. Stepping into a restricted area to clear weed that are harmful to animals and other plants was indeed a great experience. Additionally, meeting new people and learning new stuffs was quite insightful. Undoubtedly, my first experience, working with Greenline was wonderful!
