Session 1: Not too late for Climate

The Green Schools Campaign took off in full swing from the month of July with the beginning of the indoor sessions. This year, we have 42 schools from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Lonavala and Ravet participating in the campaign. Our first session took place at Auxilium Convent High School, Bandra on the 4th of July, after which we have conducted back-to-back sessions in all the other schools.

In this session themed ‘Not too late for Climate’, the GreenLine team introduced the students to the theme for the year, ‘Natural Re-sort’, which aims to cover the topics of Sustainable Waste Management and Urban Greening and Biodiversity. Under the introduction to climate change, the key learning from this session were:

  • Difference between Weather and Climate

  • Industrialization as the beginning of Climate Change

  • Importance of Fossil Fuels

  • Greenhouse Effect

  • Impact of Climate Change on Keystone Species

  • Sustainable Development Goals and Climate Action (Goal 13)

  • Examples of Climate Action in India

  • Mumbai Climate Action Plan

The session also gave the students their monthly tasks for the month of July and August, where for the month of July, the students have to draft an action plan for their school by spotting the problem areas in the school and finding solutions for the same and for the month of August, conducting a survey of monsoon creatures seen in their campus followed by interviewing a senior member in the school to understand how the biodiversity of the campus has changed over the past years.

Meeting the green schools campaigners after 2 years of working online surely was a great experience especially after seeing the enthusiasm shown by the students to learn about the environment and do the tasks given to them. The next session will begin in the month of September.

Below are a few glimpses of our first session at some schools.
